Book Now→Towering 200 meters above the surrounding jungle, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress is Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in the 5th century AD by King Kashyapa, this "Fortress in the Sky" is a masterpiece of ancient urban planning and engineering. Your journey begins at the base, wandering through the symmetrically designed Water Gardens, where ancient fountains still operate during the rainy season. As you ascend the rock, you will pass the famous Mirror Wall, ancient graffiti, and the vibrant Frescoes of celestial maidens. The final ascent takes you through the colossal Lion’s Paws—the remains of a massive brick lion that once guarded the entrance. Reaching the flat-topped summit rewards you with the ruins of the royal palace and a spectacular panoramic view of the emerald forests below.

Halfway up the rock, sheltered in a natural pocket, you will find one of the most famous ancient art galleries in the world. The Sigiriya Frescoes are vibrant, colourful paintings of celestial nymphs (Apsaras) that date back to the 5th century. Originally, it is believed that over 500 of these "Cloud Maidens" covered the western face of the rock, creating a massive tapestry of art. Today, 21 beautifully preserved figures remain. Painted using earth pigments on plaster, their colors are still brilliant after 1,600 years. These enigmatic figures, depicting women holding flowers and floating among clouds, are a masterpiece of ancient Sri Lankan art and a highlight of the climb.
