The park is globally renowned for "The Gathering," a natural phenomenon that occurs during the dry season (typically from June to September/October). As the water levels in the ancient Minneriya Tank recede, lush green grasslands emerge from the lakebed. This fresh grazing ground attracts elephant herds from neighboring districts, resulting in a congregation of up to 300 elephants at a single time.
